Rays Church celebrates one of our most meaningful traditions. Each year we gather to light the Chrismon tree, a beautiful symbol of our faith and a reminder of the story that brings us together.

What Is a Chrismon Tree?

A Chrismon tree is a Christian tradition that began in the 1950s at Ascension Lutheran Church in Danville, Virginia. The word Chrismon comes from “Christ” and “monogram.”
Instead of colorful ornaments, the tree is decorated only with white and gold, colors that represent purity and the majesty of Christ. Every ornament is a symbol rooted in Scripture
– crosses
– stars
– crowns
– angels
– and many others that point directly to the life and promises of Jesus.

These ornaments are not chosen for decoration. They are chosen for meaning.

Why This Tradition Matters

Each year when we light the Chrismon tree, we pause the busyness of the season and return to the foundation of Christmas. It is a moment to:
– remember the hope Christ brings
– celebrate the light He offers the world
– and reconnect with the beauty of symbols that Christians have held onto for centuries.

It is a quiet tradition, but a powerful one. The glow of the lights, the gold and white ornaments, and the gathering of our church family make this tree a sign of both faith and fellowship.

A Joyful Celebration

As the Chrismon tree shines again at Rays Church, we celebrate not just a tradition but a story that continues to shape us. We hope its light brings peace to your heart and joy to your season.

Merry Christmas from Rays Church.
